More about Exmoor

Exmoor is one of England's best kept secrets. Found tucked into North Devon and Somerset, north of the trunk roads heading into the far South West, Exmoor has a unique landscape: dramatic cliff – edged coastlines, concealed sandy and stony coves; upland moors roamed by wild Exmoor ponies, deer and grazing sheep; glorious rivers flowing through ancient woodland and historical villages, all unchanged in years.
One of the smallest national parks, you can always find places to be quiet. Even in the height of summer it is possible to walk for hours amid glorious scenery without seeing a soul. Visitors to Exmoor will return time and time again to enjoy the special atmosphere and friendliness of the towns and villages.
Outdoor pursuits include walking, horse riding, fishing and shooting. Exmoor is particularly renowned for its wildlife; Exmoor ponies are possibly the oldest native breed in the United Kingdom. Any visitor driving or walking on the higher moorland will see small herds of these hardy wild ponies roaming. Red deer, despite their numbers in Exmoor, are shyer. Even so, they are regularly seen in the wooded valleys and fields.

Outside the park itself, the area is well served for transport and shopping. To the east Taunton offers train services to London Paddington in under 2 hours, with transport links to Minehead, Watchett, Porlock and Dulverton. To the West, Barnstaple and Bideford sit on the estuary, with their restaurants, shops and regular farmers markets. Exeter lies approximately 40 miles south of the park, completing the ring of cities.
